Six Reasons to start playing Lawn Bowls
Lawn bowls has a very long history – having been played in the UK for hundreds of years. Today, it’s still just as popular as ever, and there are an estimated half a million players across the country.
It is a very sociable game and people of all ages and abilities can take part. It’s simple rules mean that it’s an easy game for first time players to understand.
It’s also a great form of exercise, and its low intensity nature means that there is minimal risk of injury, so people with limited physical ability can still take part.

2. Perfect for All Ages & Levels of Physical Ability
Lawn bowls is a low intensity sport, meaning that people of all ages and levels of physical ability can take part.
Lawn bowls has traditionally had a reputation of appealing to those in retirement but more recently people of all ages are getting involved with the sport.
3. It Gets You Out in the Fresh Air
There’s nothing quite like the great outdoors and there’s no better place to spend your summer days than out on the bowling green. Getting outside into the fresh air is very important as it helps to improve blood pressure and heart rate, due to the increased amount of oxygen in the air.
Fresh air also helps to make you happier – another side effect of the increased oxygen level is that it leads to an increase in the amount of serotonin, the happy hormone, in the bloodstream.
It will also increase the number of white blood cells and help them to function correctly and fight off bacteria and illness.
A game of bowls is not only enjoyable, it will also make you feel happier and healthier, too!
4. It Can Help You to Relax
As well as being good for your physical health, lawn bowls is fantastic for your mental health and can help alleviate depression and anxiety.
Being outside and in the company of other club members can help create a relaxing environment away from the stresses of everyday life. It is a lot of fun, too!
5. The Rules are Simple
The aim of bowls is simply to be the player with a bowl closest to the jack.
A full game of bowls is typically played over 18 or 21 ‘ends’. After each end, the game is reversed, and the jack is thrown down to the other end of the green to start the next end.
In a singles game, each player has four bowls to attempt to get closer to the jack than their opponent.
The player who wins the most ends, is the overall winner.
You can also play in pairs, triples or fours.
The game really is as simple as that, so it’s easy for first timers to get involved and understand right from the off.
6. It’s Good Exercise
OK, so we’re certainly not claiming bowls to be the most strenuous of sports, but even so, playing lawn bowls burns more calories than you might think.
There is plenty of walking involved and the movements needed to roll bowls require the employment of quite a large number of muscles.
This makes it a good form of exercise and, of course, the risk of injury is minimal, too.
Conclusion
With such a long list of benefits, if you have been considering taking up lawn bowls, maybe now is the time to stop procrastinating, take the plunge and get along to Colemans Hatch Bowling Club. You won’t regret it.
